The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
