The McLaren driver just pipped team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the title advantage from his teammate by a single point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, topped the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before sprint qualifying scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in realistic title contention, trailing 36 points behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his team ran a different programme. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he spun at the fourth corner soon after starting. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before rotating through the gravel trap, and was lucky to escape with just a minor contact of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner leading to the final bend on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in P19, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber in third, 0.619secs off Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
